Life is precious because we know that it will end one day.

“Now listen to me, Aaren: No man nor any living thing in this world preserves their life forever. But only to men is it given to know that we must die, and that is a precious gift. This life that is both our torment and our treasure was never meant to endure for eternity. Life is a wave on the sea. Would you force the sea to grow still to save one wave? To save yourself?”

1880s:

How true is this though? Society / idealist-minded parents who brainwash their children, and rid the actually logically imaginative thoughts from their mind and make them think that they can’t live to their fullest and truest potential as a conscious human being. This image is powerful, and I think that everyone should look at it with an open mind.

This morning I woke up early to catch the early morning screening of From Up on Poppy Hill. There were very little slots available which was in the original Japanese audio which was a shame really. The simplicity of the movie was incredibly beautiful. From Up on Poppy Hill is based on a manga series of the same name ( Kokurikozaka kara). This film is directed by Miyazaki’s son and by the name Miyazaki, most people would probably automatically think of how amazing his films were. However, if you watched this movie with this anticipation, the feeling that this is going to be another grand movie, you will not enjoy it as much as you can. You will know what I’m talking about if you’ve watched films such as Only Yesterday which is directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The disequilibrium of the plot is not a very high climax to the movie and instead the whole film remains to be quite calm. The idea of the film is supposed to be simple, which was the film was developed from the concept of a girl called, Umi who raises the flag every morning, waiting for his father to come home. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that when you watch the movie, don’t expect something highly dramatic because you may find this film boring. Unlike a lot of the recent films Studio Ghibli has produced, it doesn’t involve the fantasy genre and instead just a sort of the every day life, plain-ish, nichijou kind (with a twist of course). While you are watching, pay attention to the backgrounds of the settings such as the Quartier Latin, there are a lot of very rich context and history hidden at the back. This is also something I really admire about Studio Ghibli, they put heavy emphasis on culture and history along with the plot of the film. Also, just like the other Miyazaki films, the movie comes with a beautiful theme song.

It sucks that people are having second thoughts about this film because it’s not amazing and grand as they’d expect ALL the Miyazaki films to be. Simplicity is beautiful and I hope everyone can love this film without comparing this to previous Miyazaki films.
